First Day of School Posted on July 31st, 2007
Yesterday we started our official school year. It is an early start compared to some, but we like to take several breaks through the year. There have been times in the past where family illnesses or deaths have forced us to take a break so this is another reason we like to start early.
I wasn’t as prepared as I have been before but that was okay, we just jumped right in. There were several subjects that we didn’t quite complete from last spring so that is where we are picking up.
We are using Tapestry of Grace as our base curriculum, it includes history, writing, literature, church history, government/economics. We will also use Doorposts, Apologia Science, Video Text algebra, piano, violin, lots of art and computer work, etc. We try to keep on a regular schedule each day but as each day is unique our schedule needs to reflect that too. So some days are much more productive than others but we are always learning something.
Snazzy Pretzels Posted on July 18th, 2007
Here is a fun and easy recipe.
1 cup canola oil
1 envelop ranch dressing mix
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
20-22 oz bag of pretzels
In a small bowl combine the first four ingredients. Divide pretzels between two ungreased 15 x 10 baking pans. Pour oil mixture over pretzels; stir to coat.
Bake at 200° for 1¼ to 1½ hours, stirring occasionally. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
My Own lil’ Miss Potter Posted on July 6th, 2007
After several months of waiting, our family was finally able to watch the movie Miss Potter. (It had a very limited showing in the US, for some reason.)
It was “delicious”. As we watched the first few minutes of the movie we knew we were in for a treat. Perhaps I am a little biased though, for, you see, we have our own lil” Miss Potter living amongst us. My oldest daughter has been drawing and painting ever since she was old enough to hold a pencil. So it was a real treat to see Miss Potter’s life portrayed and see the similarities in my daughter’s life. I’ve always known that Breezy enjoyed her drawings but after watching Miss Potter, I can understand it a little more.
If you are looking for a movie to watch with your family, I highly recommend it.
Smoothies Posted on July 5th, 2007
One of our favorite summer time treats is smoothies. Icy cold ones. We like to use frozen fruit to make them slushy and cold.
1 cup milk
1 cup vanilla yogurt
2 cups frozen fruit
Blend and enjoy. This makes around 4 servings.
Variations of frozen fruit that we have used are: peaches, 1 cup peaches and 1 cup strawberries, 1 cup strawberries with a non-frozen banana, 1 cup blueberries with a non-frozen banana.
Genesis Posted on July 5th, 2007
I am very excited to have my new blog up and running. I have been thinking about starting one for several months and have finally taken the plunge. Several members of my family and friends have blogs that I really enjoy reading and they have inspired me to start my own.
This blog will give me the opportunity to collect ideas and happenings and such and put them all in one place - my own online notebook.
